Cochrane’s Mavrin becomes latest member of Crunch to commit to NCAA
COCHRANE, Ont. – The Cochrane Crunch of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League has announced that veteran defenceman Joey Mavrin has accepted an offer to attend school and play NCAA hockey in the U.S. in the fall at Saint Mary’s University in Minnesota.
The 21-year-old blueliner, who calls Lockport, Ill., home, will join the Cardinals men’s hockey program in Winona, Min., that are members of the nine-school Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Mavrin wrapped up the 2015-16 campaign second in scoring among Crunch defencemen with 25 points in 50 games on four goals and 21 assists.
He was also a point-per-game player in the playoffs picking up nine is as many contests on a trio of tallies and six helpers.
In 102 career games with Cochrane, Mavrin recorded 55 points from the blueline and added another 15 in total in 24 postseason match-ups.
“Saint Mary’s had the opportunity to see Joey play during our trip to Minnesota for the SIJHL Showcase and coach Bill Moore liked what he saw,” stated Crunch head coach and general manager Ryan Leonard.
“We are very happy for Joey his hard work and his dedication to the Crunch have paid off,” added Leonard.
Mavrin becomes the latest member off the Cochrane program to extend his playing career while also attending school at the collegiate level.
“We wish Joey all the best in his next chapter and will be missed on the blue line in Crunchtown,” summarized Leonard.
“This is what our program is about; moving players on with education and hockey opportunities.”
