Cochrane tops Timmins in NOJHL’s 2016 finale
COCHRANE, Ont. – The Cochrane Crunch got a pair of goals, including the game-winner, from Konnar Dechaine to help them defeat the Timmins Rock 6-4 Wednesday evening at Tim Horton Event in the final game of the 2016 portion of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s regular season schedule.
Timmins did open the night’s scoring 11:19 into the contest on a Cole Gilligan marker.
Cochrane came back with the equalizer eight minutes later thanks to Nate Viberg while Dechaine supplied his first of the game just nine seconds later to put the home side up by one after one.
Justin Hess made it 3-1 Crunch in the middle stanza before the Rock’s Jordan Rendle and Cochrane’s Austin Whelan traded tallies in quick order to make it a 4-2 score through two periods of play.
Timmins moved closer early in the third on a Nicholas Hauntanen man advantage effort with the defenceman adding another midway through the frame to knot the affair at 4-4.
However the Crunch countered with Dechaine’s second of the contest and 25th overall as he supplied the game-winner with 8:35 remaining.
Cochrane then got some insurance off the stick of Joseph Thielen 62 seconds later to round out the scoring.
Jacob Burhans made 30 saves in goal for the Crunch to record the win while Al Rogers faced 46 shots in defeat for the Rock
The NOJHL now enters its holiday break with game action resuming on Wednesday, Jan. 4 as the Blind River Beavers host the Soo Eagles in a 7 p.m. start at the Blind River Community Centre.
