IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – The Soo Thunderbirds got a goal and an assist apiece from Adam Pszeniczny and Deven Jones-McDonald as part of a 4-1 triumph over the Iroquois Falls Storm Saturday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League play at Jus Jordan Arena.
It was the visiting Thunderbirds who kicked off the scoring, 12:22 into the contest, as Pszeniczny knocked in his 11th of the season off a chance he generated, with help from Jones-McDonald, in beating Storm starter Lucas Cardiff-Bilodeau from the left side.
Still 1-0 Sault Ste. Marie into the middle frame, the T-Birds tallied twice in the latter stages of the session to go up by three after 40 minutes.
Gavin Killoran at even strength at 15:43 saw him bat one out of mid-air off a Landon Hill attempt before Jones-McDonald clicked on the power play three minutes later following some crisp puck movement that he completed with a quick shot from the top of the crease.
Iroquois Falls eventually solved Soo netminder Nathan Maguire’s shutout bid neatly eight minutes into the third period when Mathieu Ouellette struck shorthanded as he scooped up a loose puck off a turnover helped forced by Alexandre St. Pierre, then made a couple of crafty moves prior to roofing a close-range backhand.
Regrouping, the Thunderbirds capped off the road result with five minutes to go as Wyatt Groth was sent racing up-ice by Jayden Arnold where he wired a rising wrister into the top right corner to cap-off the night’s scoring.
With the outcome, the Soo improve to 21-12-2-2, while the setback sees Iroquois Falls slip to 11-22-2-2.
Both sides play again Sunday as the T-Birds head to Kirkland Lake for a 2 p.m. afternoon affair and the Storm will be in Hearst at 7 p.m.
