Surging Crunch double up Thunderbirds 4-2

COCHRANE, Ont. – The surging Cochrane Crunch improved to 6-0 on the season and handed the defending Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League champion Soo Thunderbirds their first loss in six games as they skated to a 4-2 decision Friday night at the Tim Horton Event Centre.

No player is hotter in the league when it comes to finding the back of the net than Cochrane’s Dustin Cordeiro, who opened the scoring notching his NOJHL-best 13th goal of the season 7:17 into the contest.

Zach Senecal tied it for the Thunderbirds three minutes later however with his third of the campaign.

Special teams allowed the Crunch to retake the lead later in the first as Jeremy McNeil connected on the power play with a minute to go in the session.

Sault Ste. Marie drew even once again early in the second on a man advantage effort off the stick of Matt Pinder, who picked up his team-leading seventh tally of the year.

A seventh goal of the campaign by Cochrane’s Hunter Atchison put the Crunch back in front for good at 12:33 of the frame.

Cochrane defenceman Jay Sidhu added some insurance for the home side in the third as he knocked in his first NOJHL goal at 5:41 to round out the scoring.

Both goaltenders in the contest faced lots of rubber on the night with Brett Young making 43 saves to record the win for the Crunch while Nathan Warren saw 47 shots fired his way in defeat for the T-Birds.
