SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that forwards Nick Smith of the Soo Thunderbirds and Austin Stauffer of the Cochrane Crunch along with Powassan’s Voodoos’ defenceman Cameron Moore have been named its Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending Nov. 26.
NICK SMITH, (F) SOO THUNDERBIRDS – Smith recorded points in both of the Thunderbirds wins last week helping lead his side to away victories at Rayside-Balfour and Espanola as they moved back into top spot in the league’s West Division.
The 18-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., picked up four assists in total in the two triumphs to help him extend a consecutive game point streak to seven in the process.
Smith has already notched a career season-high 20 goals so far this season with five of the tallies being game-winners, which leads the entire NOJHL.
His tally total also knots him for fourth-most in league play to date in 2017-18.
AUSTIN STAUFFER, (F) COCHRANE CRUNCH – The 20-year-old from Bloomfield, Mich., helping Cochrane register a pair of key victories over the weekend.
Stauffer started by tallying twice, including notching the game-winner, and adding an assist in a shutout win over Kirkland Lake on Friday at Tim Horton Event Centre.
The following evening in a neutral site affair at Jus Jordan Arena in Iroquois Falls, he scored once more as Cochrane went on to edge league-leading Powassan in double overtime.
With markers in three straight outings, Stauffer is presently tied for the NOJHL lead in goals with 21 and shares sixth overall in league offensive production with 37 points.
CAMERON MOORE, (D) POWASSAN VOODOOS – Taking to the ice with the rest of his Powassan teammates, Moore helped the Voodoos pick-up five of a possible six points on a three-game road trip.
The 19-year-old from Wawa, Ont., began by scoring once and helping set-up another in a win at Hearst Friday.
Saturday saw the Powassan D-man notch an assist in the double OT defeat vs. Cochrane in Iroquois Falls before capping off his week with a pair of helpers in a triumph at Timmins Sunday.
Moore enters play this week second in scoring among all NOJHL defencemen with 25 points, trailing only teammate Dayton Murray’s 32.
Meanwhile his 23 assists pace all league blueliners and tie him for fifth among all skaters.
