IROQUOIS FALLS, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Iroquois Falls Storm will take part in a unique experience on Tuesday, October 21, as the team visits Agnico Eagle Mines Limited’s Detour Lake Mine, located approximately 200 kilometres northeast of Iroquois Falls.
As part of Agnico Eagle’s commitment to community investment, this year the team was the recipient of $100,000 in support from the mining company’s Community Investment Committee, a natural partnership in a community of great interest for Agnico Eagle given Macassa Mine’s proximity to Kirkland Lake, Ont.
The visit will give Storm players and staff an exclusive look at day-to-day operations at Canada’s largest gold-producing mine, and a chance to see how the company’s values of family, trust, respect, responsibility, and equity come to life across its workforce and operations.
Agnico Eagle’s commitment to initiatives like this extends beyond sponsorship, it’s about building lasting relationships and fostering pride in the North. As one of the region’s largest employers, the company recognizes that strong communities and strong operations go hand in hand.
By engaging directly with youth, athletes, and future leaders, Agnico Eagle helps spark curiosity about the many career paths available in mining and reinforces the importance of teamwork, discipline, and resilience; values that are equally essential on the ice and in the workplace.
This visit reflects the company’s belief that when communities thrive, so does the industry that serves them.
“We’re incredibly thankful to Agnico Eagle for welcoming our team to Detour Lake Mine and for their continued support of the Storm,” said Gina Nickolau, Vice President of the Iroquois Falls Storm. “Many of our players come from mining communities or have family connections to the industry, so this visit offers a meaningful opportunity to see firsthand how mining drives innovation, creates local opportunities, and strengthens our Northern identity.”
The visit is part of Agnico Eagle’s ongoing commitment to investing in the communities where it operates, with a focus on education, youth engagement, and workforce development.
“At Agnico Eagle, we take pride in being part of the fabric of Northern Ontario,” said Andre Leite, Vice President, Ontario, Agnico Eagle Mines Limited. “Our partnerships go beyond mining; they’re about supporting the communities that support us. Experiences like this connect young people to the opportunities our industry creates and reinforce the shared values of teamwork, respect, and commitment that define both mining and sport.”
During their visit, Storm players and staff will:
• Tour active areas of mine, including the open pit, mobile maintenance facilities, and lodging.
• Speak with Agnico Eagle’s professionals about their career paths and experiences in the mining industry.
• Observe advanced technologies that support safe, sustainable mining practices.
This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to community pride and development, linking the spirit of teamwork found on the ice with the same values that drive responsible mining across Northern Ontario.
