NOJHL announces its weekly Eastlink 3 Stars
Cochrane’s Viberg;Timmins’ Hautanen; Elliot Lake’s Richer earn weekly honours

SUDBURY, Ont. – The Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Cochrane Crunch forward Nate Viberg, Timmins Rock defenceman Nicholas Hautanen and Elliot Lake Wildcats goaltender Justin Richer have been named the Eastlink TV 3 Stars of the week for the period ending Jan. 29.

NATE VIBERG, (F) COCHRANE CRUNCH – In two games last week the 20-year-old native of Orlando Park, Ill., collected five points helping the Crunch skate to a pair of road wins.

Viberg began by notching a hat trick, which included the game-winning goal, as Cochrane won at Kirkland Lake Friday.

He then followed that up by scoring once more and assisting on another in an away triumph at French River Sunday.

Since joining the Crunch in mid-December from Espanola, Viberg is averaging over a point-per-game with 20 in 17 games on nine tallies and 11 helpers.

In all, he’s totalled 48 points in 40 contests, including 21 markers this season.

NICHOLAS HAUTANEN, (D) TIMMINS ROCK – Now in his third year in the NOJHL, the 20-year-old Timmins product has been one of the key cogs among the Rock’s defensive corps on both ends of the ice.

Last week saw Hautanen collect two assists for his hometown side during an overtime victory over Blind River and then help set-up one more as the Rock won again in OT with an extra time decision at Iroquois Falls.

He has registered career single-season highs in goals, assists and points in 2016-17 with six, 14 and 20 respectively.

Through his first 142 league contests, Hautanen has tallied 12 times and assisted on 30 others.

JUSTIN RICHER, (G) ELLIOT LAKE WILDCATS – The lone start of the week for the 17-year-old from Hanmer, Ont., was an impressive one as he turned aside all 39 shots he faced Sunday night in helping Elliot Lake battle to a 0-0 double overtime draw at Sault Ste. Marie against the two-time defending NOJHL champion Thunderbirds.

The rookie netminder posted his second shutout of the season with the result in a match-up that saw the T-Birds’ Brandon Gordon make 20 stops in registering his league-leading fourth of the campaign.

Richer currently leads all NOJHL goaltenders in save percentage at .932 and sits second in goals-against average at 2.53 with the Wildcats.
