SUDBURY, Ont. – A three-goal night off the stick of Nolan Newton helped propel the Greater Sudbury Cubs to a 5-1 victory over the Iroquois Falls Storm Thursday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex.

Greater Sudbury carried most of the play in the first period and were eventually rewarded with the night’s initial tally at 18:54 when Daks Klinkhammer won a draw back to Newton, who wired a rising shot high over the blocker of Iroquois Falls netminder Justin Sullivan and in.

More from Newton midway through the match-up saw him dance out of the corner in the Storm zone then wheel across to the left circle where he made a quick move then ripped a sizzler past Sullivan.

Going up by three, the Cubs broke out of their own zone in numbers which eventually led to Klinkhammer roofing a backhand from in tight for his fifth of the campaign at 14:18.

Putting it away in the third, after handling a four-minute Iroquois Falls power play, the home side extended their lead when Klinkhammer hammered in a blast from between the circles, finishing off a rebound after a Nate Lazarus attempt from up high.

The Storm eventually solved Cubs’ starter Mateo Beites with 8:09 remaining as Lucas Willoughby chipped the puck past a defender then made a nifty move around another before sliding in a low shot from the left side to give him points in five straight.

Helping secure the triumph via a man advantage, Newton notched his second hat trick of the season by taking a cross-ice pass from Tyson Rismond at the top of the right circle where he ripped a shot with authority into the net with 4:15 to go in rounding out the evening’s scoring.
