Fast start sends Cochrane over Espanola

ESPANOLA, Ont. – A four-goal first period was more than enough for the Cochrane Crunch as they cruised to a 9-1 victory over the Espanola Express Friday in Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League match-up at the Regional Recreation Centre.

It was all Crunch in the opening 20 minutes starting with Dustin Cordeiro’s league-leading 15th of the season 43 seconds into the contest.

Seamus Maguire’s 10th of the campaign at 2:57 made it 2-0 while Zach Renfrew and John Stevenson added later markers for the visitors before the frame was complete.

Cochrane kept coming in the middle session getting goals from Austin Pultz and Joseph Thielen to make it 6-0 before the second was five minutes old.

A shorthanded effort from Hunter Atchison extended the Crunch cushion early in the third before the power play allowed Espanola to get one back at 6:24 when Aaron Roschinsky finished off a feed from Aaron Beauchamp.

Maguire and Jeran Knorr rounded out the scoring for Cochrane later in the stanza.

Maguire also dished out three assists for a five-point night while Atchison and Tyler Minoletti also added three helpers apiece in the win.

Kurtis David made 30 saves in earning the triumph for the Crunch.

J.P. Sabourin started for the Express and suffered the loss allowing three against on 10 shots with Aaron Callan kicking out 26 of 32 in just over 48 minutes of relief.

With the win, Cochrane raises their record to 9-1 after 10 games while the Express fell to 1-9.
