Cochrane holds on to slip past French River

NOELVILLE, Ont. – Austin Stauffer’s fourth goal of the season, early in the third period, helped the Cochrane Crunch slip past the French River Rapids 2-1 Sunday evening in a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League encounter at Noelville Arena.

After a close-checking scoreless opening 20 minutes, it was Cochrane that got on the board first as Crunch captain Connor Lovie collected his fourth goal of the season 2:03 into the middle stanza.

The visitors then extended their lead 25 seconds into the third period thanks to Stauffer’s effort as he notched his initial game-winner of the campaign.

French River got that back just over four minutes later as Brennan Kelly picked up his initial tally in his fourth game with the Rapids.

Cochrane netminder Leighton Williams shut the door from there however backstopping his side to the narrow victory.

Williams finished with 34 saves to record the win for the Crunch.

Korlan Vader turned in a solid effort, despite the defeat, for French River as he made 47 stops along the way to keep his club in it.

Cochrane continues a road swing that travels through Powassan Monday night as they take on the host Voodoos, winners of 11 straight games, at 7:30 p.m. at the Sportsplex.

The Rapids next game goes Thursday as they entertain the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners back at Noelville Arena at 7:30 p.m.
